The Klez Virus and Kin
We are not infected with the Klez (or any other) virus. We don't know if you are infected with the Klez (or any other) virus. You may be. But even if you are not, someone out there is infected and has both your address and our address on their computer...and therein lies the problem.

Commonly, a virus collects email addresses from the address book and other documents of an infected computer, and sends itself off to those addresses. However, it also uses these stolen addresses to create a fake "From:" field in the outgoing email messages, disguising the true source of the email. In other words, the common computer virus is a master forger; at this very moment, someone is probably getting an email containing the virus that appears to be "From" you!

It also means that some people are getting "subscribed" to newsletters they never wanted to join, because the virus has sent an infected email to a Newsletter "join" address (found on the infected computer) using a forged "From" address (also found on the infected computer).

Unfortunately, we cannot prevent any future virus-bearing emails that are forged to appear as though they are "From" us -- but please be assured we are not infected, and are not in fact actually passing this (or any virus) on to others.

We have been able to stop the forged sign-ups to our Newsletter, since we caught this problem within several hours of outbreak and, with the help of our Newsletter partners, took steps to block forged subscriptions. However, we cannot guarantee that some individuals were not subscribed to our Newsletter by a forged mailing in the first several hours of the virus' propagation (that is, before anyone knew what the &^%$# was going on). And since variations of this virus are springing up rapidly, we cannot guarantee that there will be no periods of successfully forged "subscriptions" in the future -- although you can bet we will do out mightiest to prevent any such problems.
