Look -- we're a little busy now, ok? We're a little preoccupied here. We got stuff to do. But just because we can't answer the mail doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to read a sampling of it, right? In fact, I daresay some of you should start pulling your weight around here and answer some of these fine people's questions. Now tell me, is that too much to ask?

Subject: As It Was (and Is)

Steely Dan had to be the biggest thing going that nobody
was quite sure about. Does anybody remember wondering
exactly who they were, as you never saw any pictures or
anything. In all of recorded music, no one ever cut across
that many styles. They got play on the AM, the FM, and a
lot of small bars and large restaurants. I myself was
always a fan of the unbelieveble wordwork that went hand
in glove with the unbelievable (name your instrument)
work. People who swore they hated rock were Dan fans (a
lot of times unwittingly, but still). People who would not
have considered themselves jazz fans, or blues fans, were
Dan fans. And the music continues to hold on, being
re-discovered. And then the new er music is discovered and
appreciated. Steely Dan continues to stand for musical
excellence-with all of the advances in recording
technologies, the Dan sound has not been duplicated. I am
now in my mid thitries, have worn out a vinly, 8-Track,
and cassette versions of Can't Buy a Thrill, Pretzel
Logic, Aja, and Gaucho, at various times. All I want to
know is Where are you driving now, Midnight Cruiser? I'd
like to continue the ride. You guys are great. I
appreciate the many things, for many years. Your albums
will continue to be looked at as examples of excellence
for a long time. As long as the means exists to enjoy
them. Thank you.

It's great fun to peruse your web site, I've gleefully wasted
lots of time there! When I first saw the Dodo Marmarosa Reward
page, I didn't know what to make of it. I see it a lot since
http://steelydan.com is set as my homepage. I finally was able
to check out some of his music, and related artists, and got to
add more to my CD wish list. That's a good thing, there is
always room for more good music. Looking forward to yours
whenever you are ready.

Waiting patiently,

18. Turn that jungle music down, just until were out of town.
19. Everything old that will be out is already out.
20. Your post was way too long and way too stupid for me to read all the way through. Could you re-phrase the question?
21. I really couldn't say. As much as they wanted, I'll bet.

37. No chance.
38. Yadda, yadda, yadda

30. Oh, sorry Walter, I didn't mean to step on your toes... I was sure you didn't read this stuff anymore... I was only having a
little fun... Please forgive me.

Patiently awaiting you latest effort,

Greetings from St. Louis, where you guys were so well bootlegged at
Riverport in '94. (I saw an Italian import of that show for $50.)
Im in a band that went out of business for a couple years, and now
were in the midst off our 'Back in the Biz Tour '98' and the Gateway
City is happy again. Were the only band in town doing your shit and
doing it well. We play the moo chords, in accordance to Mr. Dias
instructions. We nail the harmonies, we quote the solos.
My question is, how come we dont get laid? A couple other local bands
are doing the Dead thing, and the girls swoon. Whats the Dan thing
were not grasping?
Curious in the midwest.

Hello,

allright, you're very busy. I know... But is it too much to ask to
publish the latest mail?

In that case I'm even willing to answer some questions. So you have
time to do the really important things - like recording.

Take your time (you know that song: "It was twenty years ago today,
Sgt. Pepper told the band...") & make the very best of it.
Or in Dutch:
- lekker duurt het langst!
- wat in het vat zit verzuurt niet!
- goede wijn behoeft geen krans
- geduld is een schone zaak
- eind goed al goed

Wish you all the best,

Subject: What exactly is THE FEZ?

Hey guys, I'm doing an analysis project in my high school music
theory class on, The Fez....This project involves not just theory, but also an
overview of what the song means, what certain chords would imply; moods,
feelings, etc. I was wondering if you could tell me what the fez is (with
respect to you), what the fez means, basically I'm a little lost in terms of
understanding the meaning of this song, although I love it anyway. Your help
is greatly appreciated.
