WELCOME TO THE SD NEWSLETTER: OUR HOPES AND DREAMSWelcome to the Inaugural Issue of the Steely Dan Newsletter!
We're new at this; we have a database format from hell; our mailing list
is being managed by hand by a gnome who lives under the El in Brooklyn.
But is any of that gonna stop us from falling in step with Counting Crows
and David Bowie and all the other major tastemakers of the contemporary
music scene? Hell No!All kidding aside, the reason we wanted to do the SD Newsletter was to
reward the hardcore DanFans who are interested in what Steely Dan is up to
and who want to be kept informed. It is certainly true that all the
important news will continue to appear on the Official Website
(http://steelydan.com). But this Newsletter is where we will flag some of
the Biggies on the website and elsewhere, give you some extra information
about this or that, and hopefully devise a few exclusive opportunities for
those of you who cared enough to sign up.This might be a good time to mention that if we DO manage to devise some
"exclusives", you will need to actually have registered (i.e., your
sign-up information be in our registration database) to take advantage of
them. So if the text of this Newsletter was forwarded to you from a friend
(or exists on an archive that some industrious soul has decided to host),
you might want to consider signing up yourself - which you can do at
http://steelydan.com/newsletter.html. Rest assured that the very minimal
information you provide when you register will be used only for activities
of The Steely Dan Website and will never be given to anyone else, period;
We are holding the gnome's mother hostage as guarantee.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
DANDOM DIGEST = SD NEWSLETTER?? -- NOT!!!Don't be confused: This is NOT Jim Hoops' McKay's Most Excellent Dandom
Digest! (see his signup page at
http://www.dandom.com/dandomdigest/. The Dandom Digest is YOUR
gig -- a Fan Forum which we very much hope will continue. This Newsletter
is OUR gig -- a communication from the official SD website. They serve
different functions, contain different content, are written and controlled
by different people, and, most importantly, exist for different reasons.
So Dr. Klamm sez -- "Get Both!"+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"TWO AGAINST NATURE" - THE NEW CDHey, you may have heard Steely Dan has a new CD coming out. "Two Against
Nature"(or "2vN", as we have taken to calling it around these parts) is
currently scheduled for release on Feb. 29, 2000. Keep your eye on the 2vN
page at http://steelydan.com/2vn.html as more Album Art, Credits,
Lyrics, Soundclips, and other stuff will be appearing soon. This page (in
addition to our homepage at http://steelydan.com) is also the URL to watch
closely for CD-related promotions, contests, and special offers.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
PAUL GRIFFIN - AN UPDATESince we posted journalist Jonathan Singer's wonderful article about Paul
Griffin on our website (http://steelydan.com/griffin.html), both we and
Mr. Singer have gotten many kind inquiries from people concerned with how
Paul is doing now. Mr. Singer - a good soul and true fan of Mr. Griffin
and his work - has taken it upon himself to coordinate an effort for those
who would like to help. If you want to know more, return to Mr. Singer's
article on our site (http://steelydan.com/griffin.html) and contact Mr.
Singer at the e-mail address provided; he will send you more information.For those of you in the NYC area, we have also learned of a benefit show
to be held at NYCs The Bottom Line on Dec 9th.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
CLASSIC ALBUMS DOCUMENTARY: AJAEarly last winter, Steely Dan taped a video segment on the making of "Aja"
for the "Classic Albums" Series. We hear it has already
aired in parts of Europe and Canada. Our assumption is that it will make
the rounds to all the obvious broadcast outlets sooner or later. If we
receive any firm scheduling notes we will try to let you know.We also understand that a "home video" version was edited in addition to a
broadcast version. This is apparently already for sale in parts of Europe
[Caution: VHS formats in Europe and the U.S. are different: Stateside VHS
players CANNOT play most European-format tapes!]. This leads us to infer
that after the broadcast version airs in a country, the home video version
may also become available for purchase. Again - we'll let you know.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
TOURING 2K?Yes, Steely Dan will tour in 2K.
Would you believe us if we told you that's all we can say for sure right
now? The actual details -- if, where, when -- are simply not available
yet. We promise (hey, they want to sell tickets, don't they?) that
information will be sent your way just as soon as it is *guaranteed
reliable*.In the meantime, all else is rumor.
And the "Tour Dates" circulating now? Pure fiction.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION: PRESS INTERVIEWS AND ETC.Steely Dan on the Cover of the Rolling Stone? Well, maybe not.
But those of you who were around before our '96 Art Crimes Tour may
remember seeing a print or TV blurb or two about the upcoming tour.
Donald & Walter will be making the press rounds again in advance of the
release of "Two Against Nature". If the Art Crimes experience is any
guide, this means that pieces large and small will start cropping up
around the country and around the world -- too many, really, for us to
keep complete track of. We will try to alert you to any "major" national
magazine(s), newspaper(s), radio, or television events we think you might
be interested in seeing.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
THAT NICE PHOTOOur site update of 11/27 lasted for just 5 days (we TOLD you things were
moving fast around here!). But many of you commented on the cool pic of
D&W that graced the Front Page for as long as it lasted. It was taken by
Annalisa, a photographer with a distinctive style who has done a lot of
music industry shoots over the years. That particular photo was taken for
(and used in) the European Tour Book during the '96 Art Crimes Tour.That photo is now archived (see all our Front Page Archives at
http://steelydan.com/fparchive.html) under the "Blink, and you missed it"
link.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

- Classic Albums Broadcast Date, DVD

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"TWO AGAINST NATURE" PREORDERS BEGIN JAN 1, 2000 ?!?Or so they say...
If all goes according to plan, "Two Against Nature" will be available for preorder January 1, 2000. On that hallelujah day we'll be sending out a special edition of the Newsletter featuring a contribution from special guest reporters ;-) We'll also be telling you exactly how to preorder and provide you with the links to do so -- all assuming, of course, that electrons can still find their way around in the new 2K world.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
ME, MYSELF, AND DON & WALTAs has already been mentioned in some of the nation's most august publications, the music of Steely Dan will take pride of place in the soundtrack of next year's Farrelly Brothers' movie "Me, Myself, and Irene", starring Jim Carey and Renee Zellweger. Covers of Steely Dan tunes will be performed by a variety of artists, including Smash Mouth, Ben Folds Five, Brian Setzer Orchestra, Wilco, Ivy, and Leon Redbone. The movie will be released in June, and the soundtrack is slated to be available shortly before the movie's release.
Dr Klamm sez: "kool!"
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
CLASSIC ALBUMS BROADCAST DATE, DVDEarly last winter, Steely Dan taped a video segment on the making of "Aja"
for the "Classic Albums" Series.We have learned that the show will air in the UK *this Sunday, December 12th* on ITV/Channel 3 at 11:00PM.
We have also learned (thanks Alan!) that a DVD version is now available - and if you have a DVD player, it will play in both European and NTSC formats. This will probably start showing up at more CD/DVD retail outlets soon. Distributor is Eagle Rock Entertainment- DVD2009.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
TRACKS CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCEDOnly two of you got them right! We kid you not. Grand Prize (an autographed box set) will go to John Moore (also known to some of you as Hank Silvers), and First Prize (an autographed reissue CD) goes to Andy Metzger. Congratulations!
But that left us with two more autographed reissue CDs and no one to give 'em to! So we selected two names at random from among Registered Recipients of this Newsletter (that includes *you*, we hope?) to receive the goods. Lucky recipients are being contacted now.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
SNUBBED AGAINThe voters for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have once again seen fit to overlook Steely Dan. It seems as though Donald and Walter's vigorous lobbying during the '97 season (see http://steelydan.com/hof.html) all went for naught.
But not to worry -- vengeance will be theirs (and ours)! Everybody start training for D-Day, March 6th, 2000: The Hall Of Fame Induction/Tribunal For Rhythmic Justice Night!! See http://steelydan.com/hof99.html for details.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
HAPPY HOLIDAYSA Safe and Happy Holiday to All ---
We will continue to update the website over the holidays with any hot and late-breaking news, so keep it dialed to http://steelydan.com.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"TWO AGAINST NATURE" PREORDERS -- AND A GIVEAWAYThe street date release of "Two Against Nature" is Feb. 29, 2000.
But now, there are at least two places that we know of where you can preorder
the CD(there will undoubtedly be more as time goes on):The DAVE Site at
[now-defunct link]and
Amazon.Com at
[now-defunct link]You may be asking: "Say --when is a preorder delivered to me?"
And we would answer: "Even if you order early, you will not receive the
CD earlier than the release date. Under most circumstances, you may arrange to
receive delivery *on* the official release date, although this may require selecting
a particular shipping option, depending on the policies and practices of the
retailer. WE URGE YOU TO CHECK THE POSTED INFORMATION
AND POLICIES OF THE ONLINE RETAILERS THEMSELVES ABOUT THIS
OR ANY OTHER MATTER REGARDING YOUR PREORDER."But frankly, to *us* the preorder period is simply another good excuse to run a
giveaway exclusively for you, our Newsletter Recipients. So here's the deal:IF you place (or have placed) an advanced order
for "Two Against Nature" from either of the vendors listed above
before 2/20/2000AND IF you are a registered recipient of this Newsletter
on the date when you place that order
AND IF your preorder is placed using the same e-mail
address with which you are registered for this Newsletter
THEN you will be automatically entered in a drawing for
Two (2) Choice Tickets (and we mean *choice* -- from W&D's
private stash) to the Steely Dan 2000 show of your choice.
Three such winners will be selected.(NOTE: Neither multiple CD orders nor multiple Newsletter Registrations
will increase your chances of winning. Honest.)Good Luck!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
A NEW STRATEGIC PARTNER??Times have changed since Steely Dan completed their last studio album in 1980,
when pretty much all you had to do was release the thing, send it around to
a few AOR radio stations, and wait for the cash registers to start ringing.
Today, it's all about marketing, leveraged relationships, and tie-ins.So we're very pleased to announce a major initiative to form a strategic
partnership between Steely Dan and one of the world's most prestigious purveyors
of fine gastronomical pleasures.See http://steelydan.com/deluca.html for details.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
NEW STEELY DAN PRESS BIOAnd speaking of PR...
At some point during the fall of '99, DF and WB were asked to produce yet
another bio for promotional use; this in spite of the fact that they had already
created such a bio some years before (see http://steelydan.com/timelinebio.html).
But ever cooperative and ready to please, they did in fact produce a new
biography, which has been distributed to the press as part of the promotional
campaign for "Two Against Nature". You can find it at
http://steelydan.com/2vnbio.html+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
DF'S COLUMNS IN "PREMIERE"You've been bugging us for ages to post more of DF's fine "Movie Music"
columns from when he was a contributor to Premiere Magazine during 1987-89.
Find his "Mancini's Anomie Deluxe"
at http://steelydan.com/premiere3.html
and his "In the Throes of Lakmania" at
http://steelydan.com/premiere4.html.And remember: an index of all the WB/DF-penned magazine articles we have on site
can always be found at our "Lexical Lunacies" page:
http://steelydan.com/inprint.html+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
BECKER SPEAKS ON ISSUES OF 2vN COMPLIANCEI don't know about you folks, but over here at my place it's all about
setting up to get way busy this next year. Don't get me wrong - I would
be the first to admit that the "Two Against Nature" album
took a little bit longer to do than we originally thought it would - but,
in the event, it was hardly a surprise that the thing ran a little over.
Now that it's in the can, there's all sorts of stuff to get done before
that "Rent Party 2000" bus hits the interstate for the summer tour.
In the meantime, the SD WebDrone has asked me to pass along these few items from
my "Millennial To-Do List", namely:* Be an informed consumer - compare prices and
delivery policies before you hit that "place order" button
[http://steelydan.com/2vnbuy.html]* Download a nice shiny new MP3 player, just in case....
[defunct links]* Make sure those links do what you think they do
[http://steelydan.com/2vntracks.html]...and, if we hang tough with items 1 through 3 as listed above, we will
all be fully 2vN-compliant and will benefit accordingly.By the way, I have been informed that there have already been broadcasts
and/or netcasts of the song "Cousin Dupree" - as you may know,
this song was selected by Giant/Warners to be a "focus track"
(whatever that is) for the new album. Does this mean that "Cuz"
is the new single? No, not exactly. What does it mean, then? Well, we're
not really sure. What we do know is that the Powers That Be have decided
that this lyrically elegant and harmonically streamlined little ditty would
find a home at radio stations all over Creation and that, before you know it,
every gas stop and convenience store in the free world would be throbbing
to the strains of "How about a kiss for your Cousin Dupree?"
We'll see. (And, as for the question of whether this particular song is
"typical" or "representative" of the rest of the material on
the album - may I suggest that you visit the above links, do the right thing, and
judge for yourself.)I could go on and on, really I could - but it's New Year's Eve, the housephone
is ringing off the hook, which means that the Chinese food is on its way up
right now - in fact, here it is! Let's see, Seven Mysteries Shrimp,
General Chow's Thrice-Drunk Chicken, four dozen spareribs - good, very good.
Lots of mustard, no duck sauce - talk about "typical"!
Cokes, a whole bunch. And my fave - chocolate fortune cookies,
how delicious! Let's break one out and see...hmm..."You will
experience many new delights and satisfactions in the Year of
the Dragon"! See what I'm saying? That's why I love Wu's - that,
and, of course, the fried rice.But hey, before I get down with my gustatory Bad Self, let me wish all of
the readers of this newsletter and their loved ones nothing but the best of
everything in the upcoming year, century, millennium, whatever - and I hope
we'll be seeing you out there in the "real" world this summer, where
we can all judge for ourselves whether or not the so-called "Year of the
Dragon" is all it's cracked up to be.Laters W

STEELY DAN TAPES TWO FOR TV - WIN TIXDonald, Walter, and their intrepid band of crack musical dolls will be
taping two shows for television late this month in New York City.The first taping is a special for PBS. The second taping is for VH-1's
"Storytellers". (We'll pass along air dates for these as soon as they're
confirmed)We've received a *lot* of questions about how a canny DanFan can get into
one of these things. Unfortunately, the audiences will be extremely small,
and pretty much all the seats will be distributed through promotional
channels (more on this below). These things are going to be harder to
squeeze into than last year's leather pants.Still, we made sure to grab a few tickets for you, our Registered
Newsletter Recipients. So just by being registered ("no purchase
necessary") you stand to be selected next week, through random drawing, to
receive one of the following awards:= TWO Registered Newsletter Recipients will be selected to each receive Two
(2) Tickets to Day 1 Taping for the PBS Special on January 28.= TWO Registered Newsletter Recipients will be selected to each receive Two
(2) Tickets to Day 2 Taping for the PBS Special on January 29= TWO Registered Newsletter Recipients will be selected to each receive Two
(2) Tickets to Taping for VH-1 "Storytellers" on February 1A FEW IMPORTANT NOTES:
= Prizes are for entry to the taping only (sorry - no travel or
accommodations)= Drawing will begin Monday, 1/17. The whole of our international mailing
list as of drawing time will be eligible in the first round. However, we
know not all of the selected winners may be able to get themselves to NYC
to use their prize (duh). SO WATCH YOUR E-MAIL CAREFULLY DURING THE NEXT
SEVERAL DAYS: If we contact you as a winner, you will have only 24 hrs
after our notification is sent to reply and claim your prize. If we don't
hear back from you within that time, we will immediately go to the next
drawing round for that ticket, and so on, until all the tickets are
awarded. When all tickets are awarded we will post this fact on
http://steelydan.comGood luck!

TOURING 2K UPDATETouring 2K? You Bet! The current plan is to hit Japan, the U.S., and Europe
-- probably in that order.As soon as they are confirmed, more details will appear here, and also on
our long-dormant-but-soon-to-become-active touring page at
http://steelydan.com/2ktouring.html+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
AIRPLAY REQUESTS FOR STEELY DAN TRACKSThis is pretty cool: radio stations all over the country (and now in the UK
too) are adding Steely Dan's "focus tracks" of "Cousin Dupree" and "What a
Shame About Me" to their playlist. It's especially neat, we think, that
many started playing them as soon as they were able -- well before the
target date suggested by The Suits. This is a good sign, right?We've also heard through the grapevine that those stations are getting a
lot of positive email and phone calls over the tracks -- and we know full
well that we probably have a lot of *you* to thank for that.For our part, we've compiled a page of radio stations on the site,
including links to station websites and request-line info when available.
Check it out and see if your favorite station is spinning New Dan.http://steelydan.com/2vnradio.html
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
WEBSITE CLEANUPWe've been doing some housekeeping around the sprawling manse known as the
Steely Dan Website (300 pages and growing!) -- swapping a few filenames,
cleaning up a few graphics, stuff like that. If you notice any of your
bookmarked pages don't behave as they used to, could be you are viewing a
cached version.So to quote our good buddy St Al (who runs the sometimes infamous but
always excellent Banyan Trees Site over at
http://www.banyantrees.net/): "The Refresh Button

DELIVERY WOESDo you know someone thinks they're registered for this Newsletter but isn't
getting their deliveries? Please ask them to visit [ defunct link] for info and some possible fixes.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
A REQUESTWe respectfully request that people refrain from posting on the internet
lyrics and/or sound media from "Two Against Nature" that have not already
been released through authorized channels -- i.e., posted on the Official
Steely Dan Website, or played over the licensed radio or TV airways, or
offered for sale or preview by a legitimate retail entity.We hope you understand. Thanks

more precise air schedule information will eventually
appear on VH-1's Storyteller's Page [defunct link]

DONALD AND WALTER ANSWER *YOUR* QUESTIONSA while back, DanFans Extraordinaire and Webfriends Pat Beemer (The Banyan Trees Site) and Hoops! McKay (The Dandom Digest) approached Donald and Walter about the prospect of a *collective fan interview*. They correctly surmised that the next few months would see the appearance of dozens of "traditional" press pieces and reviews in which Donald and Walter would be called upon to answer, many times over, canny and probing questions such as: "Why did you decide to make another album after 20 years?" And: "Why did you wait 20 years to make another album?" And so on. Their thinking was that, after having a chance to listen to "Two Against Nature", the fans themselves would have some good, substantive questions that perhaps a few of the journalists had failed to ask.
Donald and Walter agreed. So within the next few weeks - probably by Mid-March - Pat and Hoops! will be setting up some mechanism by which *you* can submit your question for consideration.
Keep a lookout for details on Pat's and Hoops!'s sites at
http://www.banyantrees.net/ and
http://dandom.com/
respectively.+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
A COUPLE OF EXTRA CONSONANTSLiner notes can lie. Sometimes they lie like a rug. Keep that in mind when you slice open the shrink wrap on your "Two Against Nature" and read that some of the fine guitar work within was purportedly performed by one "John Herrington".
"We're trying to convince him that the career he'll be having from now on would be enough to support a couple of extra consonants." said Walter Becker in an interview.
But we're not buying it, and neither should you.
It's JON HERINGTON.
Accept no substitutes!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
BUY & BOOGIE WINNERS SELECTEDIn Newsletter #3, we announced that three (3) Registered Newsletter Recipients who also preordered "Two Against Nature" from one of our two first retailers would be selected to win a pair of premiere tickets to the SD Tour Show of their choice.
Upon reflection, 3 winners seemed wrong to us. So we picked 6.
Then for good measure, we picked 2 more from the entire mailing list, regardless of preorder status.
Lucky winners are being contacted now: Congratulations!
New giveaways are being cooked up even as we speak, and will be announced soon on these pages.
[Some of you emailed us wondering what was taking us so long to select winners. You will recall that when you signed up for the Newsletter we made a promise: the information you provided would stay here, within the website, period and forever. This made the cross-selection procedure a tad gnarly, and it required a bit of extra time. But rest assured our promise to you has been kept]

NEWSLETTER MILESTONE GIVEAWAYWhen we started this Newsletter we thought: sure, big deal, a handful of die-hard fans, a 10K file of e-mail addresses, a 5-minute mailing every few weeks....
Who Knew?!
So like the supermarket that makes a fuss over some befuddled "Xth Shopper" who happens to saunter through the automatic doors, we too welcome through our e-portal our "Xth Registrant"* who just happened to click on that "Submit" button at a numerically opportune moment.
Said "Xth Registrant*" for the SD Newsletter - one Michael Stewart - will be receiving an autographed copy of "Words + Music", a music and interview promotional CD for "Two Against Nature".
And lest you think we would ever neglect our "early adopters", we also picked 3 names at random from our first wave of signups -- way back in Nov-Dec of '99 - and will be sending each of them an autographed Words + Music CD, too. They are: Cathi Pyle, Linda Decowsky, and the ever-popular 'Name Witheld At Winner's Request'
[* Where "X" is some to-remain-unspecified-but-rather-astounding integer. By the way, this is also why some of you get your Newsletters well after your brother or roommate does: it takes several hours for all of them to be delivered.]
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
CYN'S CITYYou've seen the lovely and talented Cynthia Calhoun singing backup for Steely Dan on the PBS special, VH-1 Storytellers, and The Letterman Show. Want to see more of her but can't wait for the tour?

TICKET ON-SALE DATES
Updates Move To The Web
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Ticket on-sale date information is time-sensitive, frequently revised, and
important to many of you. So should we cast it into the turbid and
treacherous sea of clogged e-mail transfer nodes in Chicago and sleepy
nightshift server maintenance guys at _____ <= [your ISP host here]. ?Nope -- in a case like this, web-based updates are more effective, speedy,
and reliable than multiple Newsletter mailings. So our latest info and
advice on remaining on-sale dates is now conveyed through our Touring Page
at http://steelydan.com/2ktouring.html, which we can update several times a
day if need be.Please visit this page now and often. On it we have listed our latest
information on sale dates (several are slated for 4/29), along with links
to ticket vendors when available.We also reproduce the following IMPORTANT advice, which you should heed
well if you are *serious* about getting the jump on ticket sales:"Individual promoters/venues have full latitude to set AND CHANGE on-sale
dates, with little or no notice to steelydan.com. Even after an on-sale
date has been posted on a ticket vendor site, it can change -- sometimes
to an EARLIER date. Bottom line advice if you want best possible notice
of on-sale dates: Check the ticket vendor link several times a day - even
AFTER a sale date is announced."+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
REHEARSALS BEGIN IN NYC
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++This week Donald, Walter, and their intrepid little band of crack musical
dolls* convened in New York City to begin rehearsals for the Two Against
Nature World Tour.Gathering once again at the scene of the long pre-Sony winter march (see
http://steelydan.com/2vnsony.html), bandmates exchanged hearty hallos and
recommendations for chiropractors and aromatherapists. Instruments were
tuned, burritos were consumed, and ...well...within a few weeks they will
wing off to Japan, come what may.The casual eavesdropper at Studio C was rewarded with a preview of several
tunes from the new CD, and there were a few of the old chestnuts that
shed-goers of tours gone by will recognize. But -- what's this? -- strains
too of songs never before performed on stage! How many of them will make
the final setlists is impossible to tell, but let's just say this casual
eavesdropper, veteran of many a Steely Dan tour, grew positively misty at
the prospect of what may transpire on stage this summer.It's going to be a great show.
* Said Crack Musical Dolls being: Jon Herington (guitar); Cornelius
Bumpus (sax); Ari Ambrose (sax) [Japan Only]; Bob Sheppard (sax) [North
America Only]; Michael Leonhart (trumpet); Jim Pugh (trombone); Ricky
Lawson (drums); Tom Barney (bass); Ted Baker (keyboards); Victoria Cave (BG
vocals); Carolyn Leonhart (BG vocals), and Cynthia Calhoun (BG vocals).+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
SPOTLIGHT - CHRIS POTTER
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++High on our "Web Wish List" is a new page dedicated to some of the
contributors to "Two Against Nature" and members of the SD touring band -
with pictures, interviews and links. But until then and throughout the
summer, we'd like to shine a brief Steely Spotlight on a few of them with a
short Newsletter entry.We start with saxophonist Chris Potter, who pinned back more than a few new
pairs of ears with his mighty presence on "Two Against Nature".Some of you remember Chris from the Steely Dan touring party of 1993-4. You
may not know that Chris is also much in demand as a player and a leader in
the contemporary jazz scene.His Bio Entry from http://www.daveholland.com/band.html reads:
"Chris Potter was born in Chicago on January 1st 1971. He grew up
in Columbia, South Carolina, and began playing saxophone at the age of 10
as a result of music the he had heard from his parents record collection.
In 1989 he moved to New York City and while attending both The New School
and Manhattan School of Music, he joined trumpeter Red Rodney's quintet. He
played with him until 1993, and this was followed by a brief period with
the group "Steely Dan". Since then he has been involved in a wide range of
projects including the Mingus Big Band and Paul Motian's "Electric Be-Bop
Band.
In addition to recording 6 CD's as a leader, he has played in
"Trio 2000" with Paul Motian and Steve Swallow, and in groups led by
musicians such as Jim Hall, Billy Hart, Dave Douglas, Al Foster, John
Patitucci, Mike Manieri and others."We'd be hard-pressed to identify our favorite Potter turn (excepting, of
course, his awesome blowing on Two Against Nature), but of his leader
outings we particularly love "Unspoken" (1997: Concord), with Jack
DeJohnette, Dave Holland, and John Scofield.We know many of you are disappointed that Chris won't be touring with
Steely Dan this summer. Instead, he will continue to tour and record with
the renowned Dave Holland Band [ see http://www.daveholland.com/ ] and
others.Reviewer Jeff Morris sums up for us nicely: "...it all hinges on a complex
balance of order and freedom, a difficult manifest that Potter carries out
marvelously."+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
2VN ON VINYL?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++There have been questions now and again about the prospect of vinyl
pressings of the "Two Against Nature" album. We have not mastered such a
disc as of this time and so anything that you see out there along these
lines is an unofficial version made from a CD. Such a pressing would
incorporate all the limitations of digital audio (frequency response limit,
converter artifacts, etc.) plus all the limitations of vinyl (phase shift,
limited frequency response, noise, distortion, etc.). Also, such a bootleg
pressing would also not have been done by us and so the aesthetic
compromises made to master the album to vinyl would represent someone
else's taste and judgement (or the lack thereof) and so I suggest you give
this one a miss.However, at the time the album was mixed, a set of high quality analog
master mixes was made along with the digital ones, and, knowing that some
people still prefer the vinyl format, we are exploring the idea of using
these tapes to make a vinyl pressing at some time in the future. We'll
keep you posted on this possibility as time goes on.- W.B.

PRODUCTION REHEARSALS
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Production rehearsals were held last week in New York's famed Roseland Ballroom -- scene of Steely Dan's release concert for "Alive in America" (see our archived review of this '95 show at http://steelydan.com/roseland.html). Said "production rehearsals" are when band, sound, set design, and lighting all get their run-throughs and the complete concert experience begins to take form. And a fine form it is indeed, opines one anonymous lurker.
A sad note: The tunes of Steely Dan may be among the last to resound within Roseland's historic halls, as the old girl is headed for demolition later this summer :-(
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
TODAY IS HISTORY
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Despite a threat to appear in pajamas and play only a 20-minute rendition of "Oh What A Beautiful Morning", Donald, Walter, and their brave ensemble turned in a fine five-song performance [Peg, Kid Charlemagne, Jack of Speed, Cousin Dupree, and Black Friday] on NBC's Today and Later Today shows on May 5. Thanks to all the fans who managed to turn out and make their presence felt; in a crowd otherwise comprised of the Great American Middle, you were definitely noticed and appreciated.
Swami Pete Fogel has uploaded a few of his pics of the scene at [now-defunct link] But nice as they are, they don't (and probably couldn't) quite capture the goose bumps of SD playing a full tilt soundcheck beneath the soaring sky-scraping sentinels of a sleepy pre-dawn New York.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
JAPAN PICS PREVIEW?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++And speaking of goose bumps, the Awesome Global Power of the Steely Dan Juggernaut Is In Full Effect as Jumbo Jets Bung-Full with People, Gear, and Jackson's Russian Caravan Tea Hurl Headlong Toward The Horizon and the Land Of The Rising Sun. We're on the road and off to Japan! Digital cameras are deployed, and --
-- hey, listen, we're going to go out on a long limb here, and tell you to keep an eye on http://steelydan.com/2kdarkroom.html, a page we created just for you. Our ambitious and probably foolish plan -- international data connections being what they are -- is to "dump" a few raw pics as we go along for your exclusive preview, before said pics get prettied up and linked into the public website proper. So check out the link and wish us luck!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
SPOTLIGHT - JON HERINGTON
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Continuing our series on some of the contributors to "Two Against Nature" and members of the SD touring band, we turn the Steely Spotlight on guitarist Jon Herington.
"SD's New Guitar Guy" -- arguably one of the most coveted slots in the annals of popular music. And also, potentially, one of the most intimidating; few musical roles receive the same amount of examination, discussion, and debate as does this one. But Jon is handling it all with "perfection and grace", turning out work which, to our minds, often evokes the melodic and rhythmic "heart" of cherished recorded versions while simultaneously displaying his own original and powerful musicality.
Jon is a guitarist, composer, and producer who has been active on the New York music scene since 1985. His debut album on Pioneer's Glass House records, "The Complete Rhyming Dictionary" was released in 1992 and features eight of his own compositions as well as the brilliant playing of keyboardist Jim Beard, bassist Victor Bailey, drummer Peter Erskine, and percussionist Arto Tuncboyacian.
He has toured with the Jim Beard group, The Blue Nile, Phoebe Snow, saxophonist Bill Evans, the contemporary jazz superband Chroma, Lucy Kaplansky (of Cry, Cry, Cry), and, among others, jazz/blues organ great Jack McDuff.
Some of Jon's recording highlights aside from "Two Against Nature" are: Jim Beard's four recordings (three of which were co-produced by Jon); two Bill Evans records, "Escape" and "Starfish and the Moon"; Michael "Patches Stewart's "Penetration"; Bob Berg's "Riddles" and "Virtual Reality"; Lucy Kaplansky's "10 Year Night"; Michael Brecker's "Now You See It...(Now You Don't)"; Randy Brecker's "Toe to Toe"; Victor Bailey's ""Bottoms Up"; Chroma's "Music on the Edge" (with Mike Stern and others); and Robert Secret's ""Waiting for Wood".
Guitar Player Magazine called Jon a player with "one formidable voice" and "chops of doom". In addition to being featured in the upcoming Steely Dan Tour, he is currently mixing a new record. Also look for his own website, jonherington.com, to be up and running soon!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
TOURING DISPATCHES
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Five fine shows were played, mounds of jet-lag remedies consumed, the dread force of Pengo Power once again joined, if not vanquished ( see http://steelydan.com/pengo.html ) ...and so the opening Japan leg of Steely Dan's 2K Tour becomes history. As we write, the first few North American dates are in the rear view mirror and a long and winding road still ahead.
We're updating our site when we can to house some new touring material. Hope you enjoyed the two rounds of Japan pictures we uploaded to your preview page at
http://steelydan.com/2kdarkroom.html --
they are still there, and are also now linked from the recently revamped touring page at
http://steelydan.com/2ktouring.htmlWatch both these pages for additions to our picture gallery from time to time, and for some important memos from Becker & Fagen.
Wing-Ding Reminder: If you're going to a show and want to meet up with other fans, you can look up a party (or organize your own) via the fan-run Danfest Registry at:
http://www.dandom.com/danfests/+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
NEW NEWS PAGE
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++We've designed a new "News" and "Current Events" page at
http://steelydan.com/newspage.html
which can better accommodate old items and new additions of interest.Currently on this page, you'll find items and links regarding:
-- ASCAP Founders Award for Becker & Fagen
-- Sound clips for "Me Myself & Irene" SD covers
-- More info on the Home Version DVD/VHS of the PBS "In The Spotlight" Specialamong other things.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
GAUCHO REISSUE ON THE WAY
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Over the last few years, Becker and Fagen remastered their '70s catalog and wrote new liner notes for each title. Most of these (along with original album art and liners) were reissued in 1999.
Most, but not all: Of their '70s catalog, "Gaucho" alone remained un-rereleased in this form.
We're happy to report that the "Gaucho" remaster/reissue is now on the way. As with the other titles, it will feature new liner notes by Becker & Fagen along with the original album art and liners. Look for it in stores later this year.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
SPOTLIGHTS TO CONTINUE
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++We've gotten a great response on our "Spotlight" series, in which we highlight some of the contributors to "Two Against Nature" and members of the SD touring band.
We're rounding up more bio sketches now, and will continue this series in future Newsletters.
We're also working on a page that will archive these bios, and include a few more pictures and band-related links: watch for this at http://steelydan.com/2kband.html sometime in the near future.
Until Next Time...

NORTH AMERICA IS HISTORY

- Nicorette Gum is not an over-the-counter product in Japan
- Even unassuming jazzbos will occasionally hit the jackpot, almost
- Double yellow line = no passing, even in Palm Beach
- Apocalyptic thunderstorms make for fantastic encores
- You do not earn Frequent Flyer Miles on a Tour Bus
- Any given individual, upon winning the vaunted Bunsen Prize, may or may not experience the magnitude of interpersonal/professional bounce that they were hoping for and/or promised by the Awards Committee

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
COMMUNITY NEWS
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Members of the SD touring party were not the only ones clocking overtime this summer -- the Loyal Fandom has been plenty busy too. Of particular note:
## A New Little Beemer ##
Big congrats to Pat Beemer (aka St Alphonzo of the Banyan Trees site) and wife Jami on the birth of their daughter, Stella!
## iDanventions ##
Jim "Hoops!" McKay, co-coordinator of successful summer DanFests around the globe, offers streaming video of many of the festivities at http://www.dandom.com/idanvention/
## DanFests Redux ##
The tour may be over, but some revels, apparently, just keep rolling along. See if a post-tour gathering is being planned for your area at Jim "Hoops!" McKay's DanFest Registry
And speaking of community news -- now that the tour dust has settled, some of you might want to take the grand circle tour of dan-related sites on the web. A good place to start is with the Steely Dan Webring (28 sites currently registered)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
THINGS WE'VE LEARNED ON TOUR - PART II
(EURO STYLE)
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
- Don't order the pasta in a Dutch restaurant
- The more frequently your guitar tech changes your strings, the better you play
- When performing in Scandinavia, humorous headgear is not a likely to be taken lightly
- Be appropriately grateful when you are staying in a country that is famous for its beer
- As the end of the tour approaches, certain bandmembers may tend to become inconsolable - that's alright.
- European commercial radio ticket contests are not likely to be conducted in accordance with the same rigorous contest rules and standards that apply in the U.S., i.e., most of the winners will be either pals of the DJ's, involved with various Steely Dan tribute bands, or off-duty dentists. There is nothing to be done.
- There is a shocking lack of consensus on the best mechanism by which to flush a toilet, and a near universal disregard for the pliability and tearability of toilet paper
- There are no better folks anywhere than Steely Dan fans. Period.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
NEWSLETTER SCHEDULE, ARCHIVE
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Let's face it; with "Two Against Nature" out for some seven months, the tour finito in toto, and the principles already embarked on some serious, near-catatonic downtime, we'll have a lot less Steely Dan News to report in the immediate future -- and this will be reflected in the relative frequency of Newsletter deliveries.
But fear not...we WILL continue to employ this Newsletter as a merciless agent of shameless self-promotion and craven commercial-slash-artistic aggrandizement whenever the obvious opportunities arise.
In other words -- various events, announcements, and bits of news deemed steelyrelevant will still be forwarded to you through these mailings. Be they desultory dispatches or strident trumpets of The Next New Thing -- you'll get them both (and more) from us.
[And if you'd like to revisit the cacophonous brass of trumpets just past, you can now visit our new Newsletter Archive Page]
########
A final thought as the curtain closes on a glorious Steely season: The product hype and the ticket sales and the TV spots and the etceteras may be over (...for now!...) but please don't be a stranger to our little pride and joy, steelydan.com -- Donald and Walter's predominant extramusical playpen since March of '96. We hope you will stop by often, where you'll always find fresh fingerpaint on the walls and the playdough flying around.

"ONE MORE TIME..."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"THE STEELY DAN SHOW"
W. Becker & D. Fagen, ©2000
(as performed at several European gigs).
Boys and Girls
They come from all around
From dear old Stockholm
To Copenhagen town
Forget their troubles
In tasty riddum n' rime
So here you are
And now it's party time
Wrap your mind
Around this sound
And let the goodness ripple down
Goodbye to Lonely Street
You're in the Catbird Seat
At THE STEELY DAN SHOW
If you got backpacks
And pointy little shoes
Late-model roadsters
Or just those walkin' blues
A case of heartache
That you're too numb to fight
A secret sorrow
That keeps you up all night
Well don't you fret
It's not your fault
Just lay it all on Don and Walt
Just trip out on these hits
The groove that never quits
At THE STEELY DAN SHOW
[Sax Solo]
So buy a program
And/or a hat
You don't pass up a deal like that
It's only promo stuff
But hey it's good enough
For THE STEELY DAN SHOW
Until Next Time...

HAPPY 2001
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
My, but how Tempest do Fugit; This time last year we were sending out advance purchase links for 2vN, leaking MP3 soundclips [they're still there - at http://steelydan.com/2vntracks.html ], and generally getting lost in the lunacy of a pre-release promotional frenzy.
Sure, it was fun -- in a sick, masochistic sort of way -- but isn't this so much better? Here's hoping the dawn of '01 finds you and yours fat n' happy.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
GRAMMY NOMINATIONS
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Nominees for the 43rd annual Grammys were announced on January 3rd, 2001, wherein it was revealed that Steely Dan's 2000 release "Two Against Nature" had garnered four nominations.
They are:
### Album of the Year ("Two Against Nature")
### Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal ("Cousin Dupree")
### Pop Vocal Album ("Two Against Nature")
### Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical (Phil Burnett, Roger Nichols, Dave Russell, Elliot Scheiner)
Winners will be announced and awards presented during the 43rd Annual Grammy Awards telecast on February 21, 2001. The three-hour show will originate from Staples Center in Los Angeles and be broadcast on CBS-TV (check your local listings for time).
At this time, it is expected that Donald and Walter probably will attend the ceremony but will not perform.
No further details or confirmations will be forthcoming from this quarter, so we recommend that the curious just tune into the broadcast on 2/21 and see what happens.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
HALL OF FAME INDUCTION
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Yikes -- There's More
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced their new inductees on December 10, 2000, and Becker and Fagen were among them.
Finally! a successful ending to Donald and Walter's long and shameless campaign -- from the very first fortune cookie (Feb '97) to the final gracious acknowledgement (Dec '00). For those of you who don't know what we're talking about, the whole story can be found at http://steelydan.com/hof.html. [Word To The Wise: Keep and eye on this link -- leading indicators suggest this thread ain't done yet!].
The 2001 induction ceremony will be held on March 19th in New York City, and will be televised on VH-1 on March 21 (check your local listings for time)
We can report that Donald and Walter will attend the induction ceremony. We can also confirm that a case of honey mustard was indeed delivered, as promised, to the appropriate party.
Not yet known:
A) If Becker and Fagen will perform
B) If they do perform, what (or with whom) they will play
C) Who will induct them (make the presenting speech etc)
D) What Jennifer Lopez will be wearing.
We'd love to tell you that there will be confirmed info forthcoming on items A) through D)...but we would be lying. So again, we recommend that the curious just tune into the broadcast on 3/21 and see what happens.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
HI HO, HI HO
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
...it's off to work they go.
After taking time off to write a slew of new tunes, Becker and Fagen have started to record some of them in New York City and elsewhere.
Will this result in a new Steely Dan album? Hard to say; Scholars of Steely history know that not every studio sojourn sees the light of the marketplace. But if and when the time is ripe, you can bet we'll launch a page on steelydan.com dedicated to the new endeavor (and, of course, tell you about it first in this Newsletter). Stay tuned.
Reckless Statistics Alert: During the "Two Against Nature" prerelease and touring era, your quantification-minded WebDrone maintained a file of the 'Net and press items regarding SD -- including purported "facts" from supposedly reliable sources, gossip tidbits, and various "insider predictions and reports". Guess what? A full 75% panned out to be fiction. And that's a fact.
So knock yourselves out with speculations if you like -- hey, even a broken clock is right twice a day :-) Besides, it's fun! -- and we also do appreciate that such speculation reflects an enthusiasm for SD news and projects. But IF AND WHEN you are interested in discerning the actual and the factual from the guesses, the inferences, the confabs and the fibs, you know where to come. Right?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
LES PAUL AWARD FOR SD
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
MIX Magazine awarded Steely Dan their Les Paul Award at the Mix Foundation's 17th Annual Technical Excellence & Creativity Awards Dinner in New York City on Dec 1. Created in 1991, the Les Paul Award honors "individuals or institutions that have set the highest standards of excellence in the creative application of recording technology". The award was presented to Donald and Walter by Larry Carlton and Mr. Les Paul himself. Find a few pictures at http://steelydan.com/tec.html
[Earlier in the evening, Steely Dan's 2K Tour Sound Company, Clair Brothers, also won the Tour Production Award for their work on Steely Dan's 2K Tour. Congrats!]
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
CHOCK FULL O' WHAT?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Many of you have written in asking if Donald and Walter are now lending their endorsement or licensing their work to a certain coffee company. The answer is "No". And that's all we're prepared to say on this matter at present.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
NAVIGATION/WEB CHANGES
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Just about every page on steelydan.com includes a navigation menu bar linking to the several main sections of our site. Most pages have one at both top and bottom.
We've changed it.
Now it includes:
- a link to the "News" page (on which you will find items and photos from the Public Floggings of '01, e.g. the Grammys, Hall of Fame, Berklee -- and more)
- a link to our "Search" page (using a new search engine which weights results for more useful hits....we hope)
This has been accompanied by a few page name changes, so some of your bookmarks may have changed location.

DOWNTIME CONTEST
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
While cleaning out a musty storage locker not too long ago, we came across a small stash of low-level promo stuff, c. 1995-2001. As we moved to trash the lot of it, a tiny voice stayed our hand: "Useless to *you*, perhaps", piped the voice, "but of potential amusement value to some of *them*. Give 'em away!".
And so we will -- while simultaneously offering you a chance to rectify our woefully inadequate fan email posting practices of late.

We're talking computer viruses and worms, folks. New ones that just broke out yesterday: Ancient ones that you should have caught months ago. All of 'em.
Some of these little sweeties mail out random files from your hard-drive to everyone you've ever received email from (great reading!). Some have trigger dates wherein the contents of your hard drive will be nuked (have fun!). ALL of them wreak havoc on this superhighway we all share.
So in the spirit of Good Netizenship -- not to mention enlightened self-interest -- we offer the following observation :
IF you use the internet or email on a Windows-based computer or network, you MUST invest in a good anti-virus program AND keep up with fast-breaking alerts on security sites such as
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/
or
http://vil.mcafee.com/
It's the Rules of the Road these days, folks.
Drive safely!
Until Next Time...

THE NEW PROJECT
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
As of this date, we can report that recording continues and no release date is set. We expect to be able to provide more details as soon as they become available.
In the meantime, and in the face of sundry "reports" from the field concerning various purported features of the project, we refer you to the parable of "The Blind Man and the Elephant".

D&W TAPE "PIANO JAZZ"
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Earlier this summer, Donald and Walter were guests of the legendary grand lady of jazz, Marian McPartland, for a taping of "Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz" radio show. Ms. McPartland, Donald and Walter talked and played (with guests Jay Leonhart and Keith Carlock) for what promises to be a very special show for DanFans and jazz fans alike.
"Piano Jazz" is carried by many NPR stations across the US and the world [see *note below on exceptions and Internet stream options]. We hear Donald and Walter's show is likely to air sometime in Mid February of 2003, although dates and times may vary by local station. We recommend you keep an eye on "Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz" site at: http://www.pianojazz.org from which you can check the "Upcoming Guests" link for show date, and the "Where To Listen" link to find the air time for your local NPR station(s)
* Listeners in DC, Los Angeles, Minnesota, and selected other locales may find that "Piano Jazz" is not carried by their NPR stations. These people (and other interested parties) may wish to peruse the "Where To Listen" link on http://www.pianojazz.org for station sites offering scheduled Internet streams of their programming. NIGHTFLY DVD-A SURROUND UPDATE
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Last issue, we told you that Fagen's classic '82 solo "The Nightfly" was being mixed in Surround Sound by Elliot Scheiner.
Release is now slated for November 17th or thereabouts. In addition to the surround sound mix, the DVD-A will also include an advanced resolution stereo mix, plus the '82 video for "New Frontier".
By the way, the aforementioned Mr. Scheiner is the recipient of the first annual Surround Pioneer award -- created by "Surround Professional" Magazine -- "to honour individuals who have made significant, groundbreaking contributions to the art of surround music production". Congratulations Elliot!

UPDATE ON THE NEW CD
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The U.S. release date for
Steely Dan's new CD,
"Everything Must Go"
has been pushed back roughly a month to
June 10, 2003
The reason, we understand, has to do
with something called "a schedule" for
some entity called "the record company".
We are also given to understand that there
will probably be some opportunity for you to
preorder the CD (with some promotional incentive
or another) in the future. We've also
heard some muttering about something called a
"Special Edition" too...it's all rather a mystery
to us at this point, but you can keep tabs on the
emerging details at

* Schedule is Subject To Change:
Please monitor
http://steelydan.com/emgtouring.html
for additions and changes
* Leg I dates (24 shows in July and August)
are also posted on
http://steelydan.com/emgtouring.html
Tickets for many Leg I dates are now on sale.
Most others have announced on-sale dates
* On-Sale Dates for Leg II:
Local promoters decide when tickets should go
on sale. They also occasionally change on-sale dates,
and/or decide to run internet presales. Almost always,
the first to know about all these are the major online
ticket vendors. This is why our [Tix] links on
http://steelydan.com/emgtouring.html
sends you to them.
If the ticket vendor's page does not yet display
the show you're interested in, please be patient;
just continue to monitor the vendor's
page for the most up-to-date information.
* Presales:
At this time, steelydan.com is not offering ticket presales.
The presales you may see listed are sponsored by some other
entity -- e.g., for American Express users, registered users of
Ticketmaster or House of Blues, a radio station promotion, etc.
The sponsor of the presale is often (but not always)
identified on the ticket vendor page.
* For Misc. Tips:
Don't neglect Ticketmaster's own FAQ (which
explains, among other things, why calling
in the first nanosecond of an on-sale period
may not necessarily yield the best ticket choices):

Earlier this month, in the vast middle of

for rehearsals in NYC.
New kids Cindy Mizelle (BG vocals), Keith
Carlock (drums), and Walt Weiskopf (sax) join
SD stage veterans Jon Herington (guitar),
Cornelius Bumpus (sax), Michael Leonhart (trumpet),
Jim Pugh (trombone), Tom Barney (bass),Ted Baker
(keyboards), Carolyn Leonhart (BG vocals),
and Cynthia Calhoun (BG vocals) to round out

Anyone lurking at the door of Studio C would
cop to hearing some old tunes, some new tunes,
and ... yes! some tunes never before played live.
Indeed, your humble reporter -- no naif when it
comes to live Steely Dan -- had to call for the

And now the gear is packed, soon to be rolling
X-country for the first west coast dates. Final
merch prototypes are approved. Band members finish

Concert Info + Advice
+++++++++++++++++++++++++= Rumor Control
Here's something that your cousin at the venue
or your brother-in-law at the promoters
or even your "high-level contact with the band"
apparently doesn't know:
Shows can be routed,
dates can be held,
schedules can be circulated,
...all before a gig is confirmed.Please don't schedule your vacation around a rumor!
And please do not assume a show is confirmed
until and unless it is announced on steelydan.com.
= Ticket Presales
There are no steelydan.com-sponsored presales at this time.
However, some venues run presales for their members
or for series subscribers.
As always, follow our ticket links on
steelydan.com
to vendor sites to explore these options
= Box Office Blues?
Missed the on-sale date?
Think it's "too late" to score good tix at face value?Reality Check:
Shake that mega-shed mind-set by reviewing
venue capacities and seating charts of this year's shows.
(and also read about late ticket availability at
this Ticketmaster FAQ )
We know you'll be right as rain in no time.
= The Winning Hand Band
Jon Herington - Guitar
Freddie Washington - Bass
Keith Carlock - Drums
Jeff Young - Keys and B. Vocals

Presales and Good Tix
+++++++++++++++++++++++++
An American Express presale for the Beacon shows
starts May 15. General on-sale is May 20.A good time, then, to briefly address a few persistent
fallacies and follies surrounding ticket sales.First, it is not true that a presale can "sell out" a show,
or that a presale sells "all the good seats", row by row,
until the presale time has elapsed. Instead, only a portion of seats
from all locations and price ranges are set aside for the presale.
A presale never eliminates any ticket type or location
from the general on-sale pool.Second, the opening minutes and hours of an on-sale period
almost inevitably give a distorted (inaccurate) picture
of what is still available. The reasons are many and complex,
but essentially, seats are sloshing in and out of the ticket pool
at all times. The experienced concert-goer knows
to visit the ticket site regularly and often; great seats can and do
appear and reappear all the time.Finally, the ticket links on steelydan.com lead to
the primary ticket vendor(s) for that show -- never to resellers.
If you ever have any questions about the prices of or policies
regarding tickets, call the venue box office or contact
the primary vendor we have linked to.

For this repertoire, only the most bodacious of supporting bands will do. Happily, that band takes the stage this year as "The Bipolar Allstars with the Borderline Brats" (featuring Keith Carlock on drums, Freddie Washington on bass, Jim Beard on keyboards, and Jon Herington on guitar) the acclaimed supporting musicians who continue to burnish the Dan songbook with astonishing musicality and inventiveness.
=======================================
Ticket Pre-Sales and On-Sales
======================================
Repeating a few words about pre-sales:
It is not true that a pre-sale can "sell out" a show -- or even come close.
Similarly, it is not true that a pre-sale keeps selling
"all the good seats", front to back, until the pre-sale time has elapsed.Rather, only a fixed number of seats from all locations
and all price ranges are set aside for the pre-sale.In other words, a pre-sale offers some limited number of seats from
all seat sections and prices. A pre-sale never eliminates
any ticket type or location from the general on sale pool.Please see the later item in this Newsletter for a few more
words about increasing your odds of getting the tickets you want.But first, on to some more joyous and less bureaucratic news ....
=======================================
Deep Blue Organ Trio to Open Most Dates
======================================
We are delighted to confirm that for most dates this summer, Steely Dan's
opening guests will be the mighty Deep Blue Organ Trio.This award-winning, chart-topping ensemble - a jewel of the
Chicago music scene - is the current avatar of the classic B3
organ trio sound. The groove? A mile deep, a mile wide.
The blowing? Fiery, soulful, swinging, and lyrical.
The blues? You've come to the right place; members Chris Foreman
(B3 Organ), Greg Rockingham (Drums), and Bobby Broom (Guitar) deliver all
the blues you can use...and then some.See what I'm saying?
Watch steelydan.com for a complete calendar of appearance dates,
coming soon. In the meantime visit the Deep Blue Organ Trio site.======================================
Ticket Tips for Every Season
======================================
The opening moments, hours, and days of an on sale period
can often give a distorted picture of what seats are currently
and will be available for a show. The reasons are many and complex,
but here are just a few:= The band or promoters may no longer need the tickets
placed on "hold" when the show first went on sale...so they
are put back into the sale pool= Buyers have been know to scoop up the maximum number of allowable tickets
during the early sale period ... "just in case". Some number
of these are over-buys, get returned, and are released back into the pool.= Some number of early purchases are voided due to payment or other problems.
= Seating configuration may change after the sale period begins.
... and so on. The experienced concert-goer knows to visit
the ticket site often, as they may find very good seats
right up to the show date -- yes, even for"sold-out" shows!Short Version: Check the ticket site often to catch fortuitous
changes in seat availability.

The majority of shows will offer a pre-sale, usually
(but not always) a day or two before the general
on-sale date. Steelydan.com lists both sale dates.In the majority of cases, the pre-sale is sponsored
by AMERICAN EXPRESS, and the details of the pre-sale
can be found on the ticket vendor's site.In a few cases, a pre-sale might be held by another
business, a local radio station, the promoter, or
the venue.Sorry -- we can't help you with any pre-sale passwords,
conditions, or rules; we post the sale dates as they
are provided to us, but we are otherwise incognizant
of additional information. Please explore
the ticket vendor's site and/or local media
for details.
=======================================
Ticket Notes
======================================
The ticket links on steelydan.com lead to
the primary ticket vendor(s) for that show --
never to resellers.These primary ticket outlets are selling tickets
at their *Face Value* price.Please be aware that if you buy through other vendors,
ticket resellers, or special package promotions, your ticket
will almost certainly cost more, perhaps significantly.If you ever have any questions about the true prices of
or policies regarding tickets, call the venue box office
or contact the primary vendor we have linked to on
steelydan.com.
=======================================
Pre-Sales and On-Sales:
Tips for Every Season======================================
The reason most people consider buying from
brokers, resellers, or "premium packages" is
because it appears that face-value seats have
sold out.A good time, then, to briefly address a few persistent
fallacies surrounding ticket sales and pre-sales
(a seasonal tradition here on the SD Newsletter).It is not true that a pre-sale can "sell out" a show,
or that a pre-sale sells "all the good seats", row by row,
until the pre-sale time has elapsed. Instead, only a portion of seats
from all locations and price ranges are set aside for the pre-sale.
A pre-sale never eliminates any ticket type or location
from the general on-sale pool.Indeed, the opening minutes and hours of a general on-sale
period almost inevitably give a distorted (inaccurate) picture
of what is still available. The reasons are many and complex
-- perhaps we will expand on them in future Newsletters --
but bottom line is that seats are sloshing in and out
of the ticket pool all the time. The experienced concert-goer
knows to visit the ticket site regularly and often;
great seats can and do pop up all the time, even as
show date approaches.

……Coachella Report
****************************The Steely Dan ROCKABYE GOLLIE ANGEL TOUR kicked off
in April with seven western shows bracketing two weekends at

……You're gonna know that your little tree has been shook ..."And indeed, the fairgrounds were filled with the shimmering sibilant sound
of thousands of trees being shaken -- and the collective CrackBoomHiss
of thousands of minds being blown.The appearances generated a lot of press; Google around for some fun reading.
